Please join us in the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion of the topic that is of interest to you. This meeting is specifically designed to be interactive and we are asking everyone to submit questions in advance so we can have an informative and engaging session.
This workshop will be facilitated by Marquiita Mayes, Kathryn Valencia and Joan Capurro.
Marquitta Mayes
Marquitta Mayes has worked for the California Employment Development Department for nine years in various assignments as an Employer Liaison and most recently with the Marin Employer Advisory Council providing services to the business community, community-based organizations and youth serving agencies.
Ms. Mayes is a planner of seminars, workshops and job fairs and enjoys networking with a wide range of groups. Ms. Mayes has expertise in the areas of diversity recruiting and cultural competencies in dealing with a broad range of demographics in Marin and San Francisco counties. She is looking forward to devoting more time to job identification and assisting employers with workforce development issues.
Kathryn Valencia
Kathryn has been the Coordinator of Marin Professionals since she founded the program 15 years ago. She has had the responsibility and delight of nurturing the program and seeing it grow and strengthen each year. As Kathryn says, she has had the opportunity to live her dream job.
Marin Professionals is a networking and career-support organization for professional, executive and managerial candidates in career transition. Support services include a variety of professional workshops, networking activities, guest speakers and peer support. The organization is a Chapter of Experience Unlimited and is sponsored by the Employment Development Department.
Marin Professionals has been in operation for 15 years and has served over 2,400 individuals from Marin, Sonoma and the East Bay. The members of Marin Professionals are experienced individuals representing professions across the board. The program maintains a success rate of 85-90% of members going into the field of their choice.
Kathryn brings the experience of her extensive background in the non-profit arena to the Marin Professionals program. While the majority of her experience was as Executive Director and Project Manager for non-profits, she also served as program developer, evaluator and fundraiser.
Joan Capurro
As the Director of Community Relations for Bank of Marin, Joan is responsible for the corporate giving and relations with the community at large. For the last thirty years she held management positions ranging from supervisor to Area Manager of four branches of the Crocker Bank.
Joan is the President of the Board of Marin County School Volunteers. She serves on the Board of the Center for Volunteer and Non-Profit Leadership of Marin, the Marin Asset Building Collaborative and sits on the development committee for Petaluma Ecumenical Properties which provides low income housing for seniors & the disabled. Joan is active on the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce and has served as the Past Chair of numerous organizations including the Workforce Investment Board (WIB).
The WIB is responsible for policy-making and implementation of the workforce development system administered through the Marin Employment Connection, the ‘one-stop” facility for service delivery in Marin County. The WIB replaced the Private Industry Council of Marin County as mandated under the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) of 1998 which became operational July 1, 2000. The WIA is a unique national workforce preparation and employment system designed to meet the needs of businesses and job seekers, and employees who want to further their careers. The Department of Health and Human Services, as the “One-Stop Operator,” is the designated authority for program administration.
